The basics of at home brewing

Happy Wednesday, Mixers!

We just wanted to take a few minutes and share a few pieces of advice for brewing the most delicious coffee at your own house! Of course, we always encourage you to come and say hi to us when we’re open, but there are definitely some Saturday mornings when you just need a goooood cup of coffee!

This is not an overwhelming blogpost about pour overs, chemex, aero press, french press, etc. etc. etc. This is where we tell you to proudly use your plain coffee pot! We’re just going amp up a few of the other factors to make it the most delicious, high quality coffee you’ve ever had at home. And suddenly, you’re a barista!!!

So, without further adieu, here are the basics to brewing at home.

The Coffee.

There is always a reason that Folger’s cost way way less than the other stuff. If you’ve been drinking Folger’s your whole life, there is nothing in the world wrong with that! But, I want you to just give something else a try. Just once. (I’ve officially changed the mind of 3 customers now into buying good coffee, and it’s awesome!)

You can buy the same coffee that we use! We are proud brewers of Blanchard’s coffee. You can visit their website here to learn all about how they are striving to work directly with farmers to ensure they are well taken care of! We sell the Blanchard’s Blend, and the Dark as Dark in whole bean here at the mobile bar! They are $10 each, and we would love to hook you up!

Grind.

The number one, absolutely most important step is to buy your coffee in whole bean, and grind it as you brew it. Buying it whole bean and having the whole bag ground doesn’t quite cut it either. Invest even just $20 in a grinder from Target, and you’re well on your way to delicious coffee at home!

Seriously, if you hear nothing else, hear this. Grinding your coffee immediately before brewing will totally change your cup of coffee. Once the coffee is ground, it begins to lose its flavor. Once it sits for a week, even in that awesome coffee bag, it’s lost most of the deliciousness it once had. I would tell you a million times to buy a cheap grinder before buying some fancy coffee pot with blue LEDs and a timer!

Ratio.

Just like any other aspect of coffee, their are a million different opinions on the perfect coffee:water ratio. But, I think the best opinion is YOURS, since you’re the one drinking it! A great place to start is about 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water. You can absolutely adjust that up or down depending on your taste buds.

Water.

Whenever you can, it’s best to use filtered water. Even in our tiny mobile bar, we have an awesome water filter. All of our coffee is brewed with quad filtered water. That’s pretty top notch if we do say so ourselves! This isn’t a must have, but if you have a fancy water filter at home, try using water through that rather than your faucet!
