Happy Tuesday, Mixers!

I (Katie) just thought I would pop in and write a quick post about something you may have never thought much about before… our hot chocolate! And if you’re feeling anything like me this rainy afternoon, you could probably use a cup!

We are most definitely a coffee bar, and lovers of coffee as well! However, here’s a little secret about your TMH Baristas… we ALL LOVE HOT CHOCOLATE! Like, a lot. So, here’s the back story…

I spent last summer in Alaska where I lived with my brother and sister-in-law. I worked at REI selling outdoor gear all summer and I absolutely loved every minute of it! There were many a coffee shop around Anchorage. Like really, there were SO MANY. Sometimes it was overwhelming! If you’ve talked to us much about our idea for the mobile bar, you’ll know that it was inspired by these little coffee “huts” in Alaska.

My two favorites were just a walk away from work, so I visited them quite often, and found this new love for specialty hot chocolate! I never thought much of hot chocolate. To me, it was just an add-on to any coffee menu. You know, something for the kids or those interesting people who don’t like coffee. But, I suddenly found myself ordering hot chocolate everywhere I went! I was also planning our wedding at the time, and already had my heart set on having a hot chocolate bar (thank you, Pinterest!) However, I knew I just needed the perfect hot chocolate recipe, so I went searching.

I tried hot chocolate at four local shops before I started experimenting with my own recipes at home. I remember sitting on the couch with some friends one evening and making everyone try my hot chocolate recipe. I asked for feedback and from there, “wedding hot chocolate” was born! I finally found the perfect ratio of chocolate:sugar:milk.

We used this recipe at our wedding, and everyone LOVED it! It was quickly named “wedding hot chocolate”, and any event after that was expected to serve this new delicacy! So, when it came time to create The Mix House menu, I knew this hot chocolate had to be on it!

If you’ve never had our hot chocolate, you should definitely try it soon! If you have, and you’ve wondered why it tastes different than maybe what you’re used to, here’s why:

Most coffee shops around here (that I’ve looked into, anyway) use a chocolate sauce mixed with steamed milk to create their hot chocolate. This is a delicious (and easy!) way to make hot chocolate, but I have to think that there’s one that’s just a little bit tastier! We create our own hot chocolate “mix” if you will. Then, we steam that mix into the milk! It creates this creamy, foamy, perfectly chocolate but not too saucy delicious classic! Then, we top it with freshly made whipped cream!

If you haven’t tried it yet, the weather is perfectly chilly for this delicious treat! Come by and see us M-F, 5am-11am and we’ll hook you up!

We hope everyone is having a fabulous week! We can’t wait to run into you soon!

Happy Wednesday, Mixers!

We just wanted to take a few minutes and share a few pieces of advice for brewing the most delicious coffee at your own house! Of course, we always encourage you to come and say hi to us when we’re open, but there are definitely some Saturday mornings when you just need a goooood cup of coffee!

This is not an overwhelming blogpost about pour overs, chemex, aero press, french press, etc. etc. etc. This is where we tell you to proudly use your plain coffee pot! We’re just going amp up a few of the other factors to make it the most delicious, high quality coffee you’ve ever had at home. And suddenly, you’re a barista!!!

So, without further adieu, here are the basics to brewing at home.

blog title

The Coffee.

There is always a reason that Folger’s cost way way less than the other stuff. If you’ve been drinking Folger’s your whole life, there is nothing in the world wrong with that! But, I want you to just give something else a try. Just once. (I’ve officially changed the mind of 3 customers now into buying good coffee, and it’s awesome!)

You can buy the same coffee that we use! We are proud brewers of Blanchard’s coffee. You can visit their website here to learn all about how they are striving to work directly with farmers to ensure they are well taken care of! We sell the Blanchard’s Blend, and the Dark as Dark in whole bean here at the mobile bar! They are $10 each, and we would love to hook you up!

The number one, absolutely most important step is to buy your coffee in whole bean, and grind it as you brew it. Buying it whole bean and having the whole bag ground doesn’t quite cut it either. Invest even just $20 in a grinder from Target, and you’re well on your way to delicious coffee at home!

Seriously, if you hear nothing else, hear this. Grinding your coffee immediately before brewing will totally change your cup of coffee. Once the coffee is ground, it begins to lose its flavor. Once it sits for a week, even in that awesome coffee bag, it’s lost most of the deliciousness it once had. I would tell you a million times to buy a cheap grinder before buying some fancy coffee pot with blue LEDs and a timer!

Just like any other aspect of coffee, their are a million different opinions on the perfect coffee:water ratio. But, I think the best opinion is YOURS, since you’re the one drinking it! A great place to start is about 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water. You can absolutely adjust that up or down depending on your taste buds.

Whenever you can, it’s best to use filtered water. Even in our tiny mobile bar, we have an awesome water filter. All of our coffee is brewed with quad filtered water. That’s pretty top notch if we do say so ourselves! This isn’t a must have, but if you have a fancy water filter at home, try using water through that rather than your faucet!

And that’s it! Comment and let us know your thoughts. If you try any of these steps, we want to know how it went! We want to be more than just the place where you get your latte.

We want to help educate and enhance your overall coffee experience.

Hello Mixers! Happy Fall! We’re starting a new series on the blog where we will be recapping the previous month, letting you know about upcoming events or projects, and just keeping you in the general loop of things with The Mix House. September was a busy month for us – we had 8 events outside of our normal morning hours and continued to grow our customer base. October is looking to be just as busy if not busier and we are so grateful!!

Selfie Stick Fun!

Selfie Stick Fun!

We would ask if anyone wants to guess on what the number one drink was for the month, but we’re sure you already know. With the launch of all things pumpkin, the Pumpkin Spice Latte was an easy top seller! The top baked good was also the Pumpkin Whoopie Pie! Mmm…makes you want to come get one doesn’t it?

Pumpkin Love!

We were also able to go ahead and purchase some additional equipment as a result of a great month. While you may not see an immediate impact from these things, we certainly will on the inside of the trailer. We are constantly looking at ways that we can improve our products and our service. As a result we have bought some new equipment that will hopefully help us to serve you quicker and more consistently. We can’t wait for those packages to come in the mail! It’s going to be like Christmas…in October!

Another thing we want to share with you is a list of all of the places we will be in addition to our normal morning hours. While some of the events we are doing are private events, we do have some that anyone can come to! We hope to see you there:

October 10 – Sparta Day – 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Salem Baptist Church – Sparta, VA

October 11 – Port Royal Charter Day – 12:30 pm – 7:00 pm – King Street, Port Royal, VA

October 16 – Caroline High School Football Game – 7:00 pm

October 17 – Bowling Green Harvest Festival – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – Main Street, Bowling Green, VA

October 23 – Caroline High School Football Game (Homecoming) – 7:00 pm

To stay up date on any changes or additions to these events, make sure you’re following us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

One last announcement! We’re going to be starting a weekly newsletter within the next few weeks! The newsletter will be different from the blog in that it will be giving you immediate news before anyone else finds out, have some coupons every once in a while, will have recipe and brewing tips, and so much more! Be sure to sign up!

Hope to see y’all soon! Mix on!

Hello everyone!

We have been pretty quiet over here on the blog lately, but we’re working on getting into a better routine for posting here! We just wanted to give you a quick update on a few changes taking place next week!

Our hours are changing a little bit for a couple of reasons. We will be opening 1/2 an hour earlier for you super early birds (woohoo!) and closing an hour and a half earlier so that we can accommodate more local events (super woohoo!) So, our new hours will be as follows:

Beginning Monday, September 7
Monday – Friday, 5:00am-11:00am
Saturday – available for events
Sunday – CLOSED

We have been booking SO MANY events for the fall, and we are SO EXCITED about that! Here are the ones we have booked so far. We hope to see you at some of these!

September 19 – Private Wedding
September 26 – Crown Trophy Car Show

Check out our Facebook for more details on each of these events as they approach! That’s where you can find locations and times for these dates.

If you know of any more events for any time this fall/winter, PLEASE let us know! We are doing our best to stay as local as possible. However, we are booking events first come, first served. Because of that, we’ve already had to turn away local events because someone out of the county has already booked us! The sooner we know about your event, the better! Email for information!

The Moment You’ve All Been Waiting For…
FALL MENU!!! We are SO EXCITED to bring our Fall Menu to you! We have been working SO hard to perfect each and every recipe. We are still finalizing a couple of details with the folks who approve our in-home kitchen, so we can’t quite share those baked items yet. BUT, here are our fall drinks! These will debut on Monday, September 7th, along with the NEW baked goods!

Pumpkin Spice Latte

S’mores Mocha
Hot Apple Cider

These, of course, are in addition to our regular menu! Nothing has been taken away, only added to:)

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this! We are so appreciative of each and every one of you. When you read our blog, share our Facebook post, stop by to grab a coffee in the morning, or tell your friend about us, you are helping us to grow WAY more than you know! We would be absolutely nothing without the support and encouragement of each and every one of you, so THANK YOU!

We can’t wait to see you!

    • Katie Gibson - Hi Kerry! All of our baked goods have a full list of ingredients and allergens. We do not have that information for our drinks, but would love to see how we can help you! Of course, all of our products are processed in areas which contain nuts, milk, soy, egg, wheat, etc., so we can never make any guarantees. Hope this helps!ReplyCancel
